A recent study revealed that most of our online time is spent on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Social networking is believed to take up almost 23 percent of the total time spent online.
Contrary to popular belief that checking and sending emails took up most of the online Nielsen showed that only 8.3 percent of the total time was spent on emails.
These figures are vastly different from last year which saw a more equitable distribution between emailing and social networking with just a difference of about four percent. This change could possibly be explained by the fact that social networking sites are the primary method of communication between friends these days, which makes sending an e-mail much less necessary, reported technologizer.com.
Within social networking sites also, there is tremendous difference. Facebook, for example, enjoys about 85 percent of this social networking time, followed by a distant second in MySpace with just 5 percent and Twitter a mere 1 percent.

Gaming is another one of the popular online activities catching on very fast. Interestingly this trend too, has a lot to do with social networking sites. Popular games like Farmville have gained momentum due to Facebook.
